Information on Drugs, Alcohol & Interventions in New Hampshire

When considering a drug or alcohol intervention in New Hampshire, it is helpful to understand the predominance of the different drug activity within the state. In America's early days, some settlers were sent to develop a fishing colony, thus the birth of New Hampshire. New Hampshire's most abundant natural resource is water, due to its location of the eastern seaboard. The state put its resource to use, and was soon one of America's first industrialized areas. Sadly, New Hampshire has not been able to avoid the ravages of drugs and alcohol that have scourged the rest of the nation. New Hampshire is threatened daily by the large amounts of illicit drugs that are distributed and abused throughout the state. The majority of New Hampshire's drug supply is shipped into the state from Lowell and Lawrence, Massachusetts. Sometimes, but on a limited basis, illicit drugs are also transported on private vehicles, from Boston, New York City, and Canada. Commercial vehicles, aircraft couriers, package delivery services, ATVs, and snowmobiles are also used to transport drugs from different areas into New Hampshire. A large percentage of New Hampshire's illicit drugs are kept for abuse within the state instead of being shipped to other states.

Heroin poses the most significant threat to the state. South American is the most commonly type of heroin abused in New Hampshire. Since 1997, the number of treatment admissions that are heroin-related have increased at an alarming rate. Also, approximately half of the deaths in New Hampshire in 2001 were linked to heroin.

Powdered and crack cocaine are widely-available throughout New Hampshire. Cocaine is abused at high rates and is often linked to violent crime. However, the number of treatment admissions also shows that the amount of crack cocaine abusers seems to be decreasing in the state. Even though all these different drugs are readily available, marijuana is still the most abundant and commonly abused drug in New Hampshire. Some other dangerous drugs, such as MDMA, are becoming increasingly available and causing a much greater concern to law enforcement. Methamphetamine production, distribution, and abuse do not yet pose a significant threat to New Hampshire.
